Have you tried saying NO?

Have you tried saying NO?

We’re business owners. Entrepreneurs. Problem solvers.

Often our default answer is yes, even if we don’t know what the question is (hat tip to the excellent book by Neville Wright.. if you haven’t read it yet, do yourself a favour and grab a copy here: https://amzn.to/2RTj56T).

But you can’t just walk around saying YES to every single opportunity that comes your way. That path leads to overwhelm, frustration and burnout.

One of our One Percenters, who shall remain nameless (but she knows who she is!) has threatened to block Jason and I from seeing her posts on Facebook, as we keep reminding her that she’s taking on too much.

She’s a 100mph, all-in type of person. She doesn’t do half measures, or lame attempts. If she says she’s going to do something, she does it, and she does it well.

Even if it means working 100 hour weeks, burning out, and feeling immense overwhelm.

We’ll remind her to ease off the gas a little, and to make some time for herself, her health, and her family.

Then two weeks later, she’s launching another brand new business, or embarking on a speaking career, or creating a new product line.

All of which are great ideas, but if you haven’t got the systems and processes, the capacity, to deal with it, there’s only so much you can do.

When we feel that our One Percenters are nearing capacity, but still looking at new opportunities, we ask them the following question:

“If you say yes to this, what are you saying no to?”

You have a finite amount of time.

If you say yes to working late tonight, you’re saying no to tucking the kids into bed.

If you say yes to launching a brand new business, you’re saying no to giving your existing business 100% of your focus.

Something’s gotta give.

You can either choose what gives, or let the natural process of displacement choose for you – And the first thing to “give” there is normally your health. Your wellbeing.

Exhaustion. Burnout. Nervous Breakdown. Call it what you want. It’s your body’s way of saying “NO! No more.”

If you say yes to this, what are you saying no to?

“John and Jason have been there and done it and don’t have an ego about it like many others.

I know I am better organised, better planned and prepared and more likely to succeed sooner, thanks to their wisdom and experience.”

Since then, it’s sold thousands and thousands of copies all over the world, and attracted more than 100 five-star reviews. But more importantly, it’s changed the lives of small business owners all over the world, who now understand that running a lifestyle business isn’t a bad thing.
